Speaker Bio:

Holly Parkis is Portfolio Manager for Special Studies at SMA Consulting. She is an expert in Monte Carlo simulation, project planning and management, and quantitative risk analysis, and has provided advisory services including integrated cost and schedule risk analysis, risk analysis and management, procurement preparation and claims preparation and defense for billions of dollars’ worth of infrastructure projects including highways, tunnels, major bridges, drainage, light rail transit, water and wastewater treatment, and manufacturing. She has authored multiple articles, journal papers, and whitepapers, and is a regular guest lecturer at the University of Alberta.

Presentation Overview:

Capital projects are an exercise in managing uncertainty. Linear projects are highly vulnerable to all forms of risk and changes in site conditions are a major source of cost increase. Tunnel projects sit at the intersection of all of these concerns. Good risk quantification, strong risk management and a risk-aware project culture is a vital component to ensure project success.

TACym Learning Series: Shoring 101 - The Basics
The TAC Young Member’s Committee is excited to announce the next in our educational series for our members. Focused on introductory topics, the webinar series will strive to teach basic tunnelling themes not often taught in school but beneficial to those working in the industry. If you’re a student, just starting your career, or someone who likes to continually learn, then you’ll be sure to pick-up something new.

Topic: Shoring 101 – The Basics

Presentation Overview:

In this talk we will cover why we need shoring, comparison of types of shoring, and basic shoring design concepts. We will touch on learning how to “follow the load” in design, defining the problem, asking the right questions, and special design considerations for tunnelling launch and exit shafts.

Speaker Bio:

Shawna Munn, Isherwood Associates , Senior project engineer

Shawna graduated from Queen’s University and joined Isherwood Geostructural Engineers in 2010 as a design engineer and project manager. She has worked on some of Isherwood's trickiest subway and waterfront projects, excelling at outside of the box thinking. Her expertise is in designing complex excavation systems including tied back shoring, internal bracing systems, and tunnelling launch and exit shafts.

When: Thursday, April 25, 2024 at 3pm (EST) / 12pm (PST)
